Rainbow Milk Experiment (Dish Soap + Food Coloring)

A drop of dish soap sends food coloring swirling across milk — a stunning kitchen-table experiment.

Steps

1. Pour whole milk into a shallow plate or dish.
2. Add a few drops of different food colorings in a circle across the milk’s surface.
3. Dip a cotton swab in dish soap, then touch it to the center of the milk.
4. Watch the colors burst and swirl — try a fresh drop of soap in a new spot to see it happen again.

Notes

The higher the fat content of the milk, the better this works — whole milk gives the most dramatic swirls.
