Letter and Name Tracing in Sand

A shallow tray of sand for tracing letters with a finger — no pencil pressure, just practice.

Steps

1. Pour a thin layer of sand, or salt, or rice into a shallow tray or baking sheet.
2. Write a letter in the sand yourself first to show the shape.
3. Let your preschooler trace it with their finger, then smooth the sand and try again.
4. Work up to tracing their whole name, letter by letter.

Notes

Smoothing the sand flat between tries makes this endlessly reusable with zero paper waste.
