Ice Cube Color Melting

Colored ice cubes melting on a tray — a cool, mesmerizing first science moment.

Steps

1. Freeze water with a few drops of food coloring in an ice cube tray overnight.
2. Pop out a couple of cubes onto a rimmed baking sheet or highchair tray.
3. Let your baby touch, push, and watch the colors melt and mix together.
4. Wipe up as it melts — a burp cloth under the tray catches most of the drips.

Notes

Cold ice can surprise little hands — let them touch a cube on your palm first to gauge their reaction.
